How we source the data
This site has two kinds of figures: the conversion factor itself (mathematically exact, derived from an international standard) and the property-size context (drawn from named published references). This page describes both.
The conversion factor
1 m² = 10.7639104167… ft² is mathematically exact. It derives from the International Yard and Pound Agreement (1959), which defines 1 foot = 0.3048 metres exactly. Therefore 1 metre = 1/0.3048 = 3.28083989501… feet, and 1 m² = (1/0.3048)² = 10.7639104167… ft².
Standards references: NIST Special Publication 811 (Guide for the Use of the International System of Units), ISO 80000-3:2019 (Quantities and units, Space and time). Full citation detail on the sources page.
Property-size data
Where the site shows real-world context (e.g. "100 m² is a typical 3-bed UK semi"), each benchmark is named-source anchored. Sources include RICS Residential Property Standards, LABC research, Savills UK Residential Research, RIBA Space Standards, ONS English Housing Survey, GLA Housing SPG, Eurostat Statistics on Housing, and US Census Bureau American Housing Survey.
Full per-category source detail (UK home sizes, apartment sizes, commercial space, hectares/acres) is on the sources page.
Refresh discipline
The conversion factor does not change; it is a defined constant. Property-size benchmarks are refreshed when the cited published sources publish updated editions. Site values are reviewed periodically against the most recent published source.
The conversion factor on the home page reads "1 m² = 10.7639 ft²" (4 decimal places); the full precision value is on the formula page.
What we do not publish
- Imperial-system rounded shortcuts. We do not publish a rounded factor like "multiply by 10.76" as the only reference; the full-precision value is always available.
- Non-source-anchored benchmarks. Property-size figures with no named published source are not published.
- Personal data. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Inputs are not transmitted, logged, or stored.
Editorial position
This site is operated by Digital Signet, an independent AI-development studio founded by Oliver Wakefield-Smith. We do not sell flooring, do not sell property, and do not accept paid placements from any vendor in the measurement / property space. See /about for the operator and the wider network.
